JUSTICE FOR ALL

The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation funds civil legal aid programs across
the state, ensuring that all residents have equal access to the justice system.

These programs build stronger communities and a stronger Illinois.

A New Determination to Improve His Life

Malcom had a lot of difficulty dealing with his mother’s death. His driver’s license was suspended after he had a car accident while uninsured. Things began to spiral down from there.

He had worked as a trucker for eight years, but without a valid license, he lost his job. Without a job, he was unable to pay rent and soon Malcom became homeless. Legal Aid Chicago worked with him to get his life back on track.

Barbara Richardson, an attorney with Legal Aid Chicago’s Consumer Practice Group, helped him file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. After receiving a discharge of his debts, Malcom was able to get his license reinstated, get another job and obtain stable housing. Access to legal aid gave him “a new determination to improve his life.”
