New Leaf Illinois members say more than 700-thousand Illinoisans could be eligible for expungement but many need some help in the process. State lawmakers pushed to include record expungement in the law that legalized recreational marijuana in 2019. Now, legal aid partners hope to pave the way for those hit hardest during the war on drugs. “While people of all races illegally grew, smoked, and sold marijuana, it was black and brown people who were much more likely to be arrested and incarcerated for it.”
