CARBONDALE — The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation Board of Directors approved grants totaling more than $2.4 million to 34 Illinois civil legal aid providers in December.

Several of those funds went to Carbondale nonprofit organizations.

Grants were made possible with funding from state appropriation for legal aids as well as settlement funds awarded to the foundation by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

First, starting with the grant funds from state appropriation:

• The Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation received $369,690. The foundation provides low-income people in 65 counties with representation on family housing and consumer law cases.

• Equip for Equality received $50,000. The service provides legal advice, information and referrals on special education legal issues through a stateside telephone helpline.

• The Dispute Resolution Institute received $40,000. The institute helps low-income families and children resolve custody and visitation issues by providing mediation services in the First Judicial Circuit.

• The Southern Illinois University School of Law Foundation received $2,310. The foundation educates immigrant detainees in Southern Illinois on their legal rights.

Also, through settlement funds, The Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation received and additional $105,000 and Equip for Equality received an additional $50,000.
